The fabric is rolled from the lower beam over this board and on to the beam in front of the operator. The machine is operated by means of a traddle. The operator watches for loose ends sticking out of the hand. Note the card on the inspection board, which the operator uses to keep a record of the yardage and separate pieces, and the gauge almost directly above it which keeps a continuous record of yardage.

Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940), an American photographer, began his career as a teacher at the Ethical Culture School in New York City. He first used a camera to record activities at the school. Subsequently he photographed immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, the shocking condition of child laborers throughout the U.S., the activities of the American Red Cross in World War I, and workers in various industries.
